Siesta Key 89 Beach

Mersino installed a wellpoint dewatering system consisting of 620′ of wellpoints. This job in particular experienced a unique issue in that the only place the Southwest Florida Water Management District would permit discharge was directly into the Gulf of Mexico. Running a discharge line approximately 150’ into the Gulf presented a number of issues that we wouldn’t encounter on a typical wellpoint job such as waves, tides, wildlife and tourists.

Methodology
The completed system consisted of one 6″ Global Standard Trash pump with 6″ QD layflat discharge line to the Gulf, with approximately 150′ of 6″ QD HDPE pipe out into the Gulf of Mexico. The decision was made to set fused and flanged HDPE on the beach to form as rigid a discharge pipe as possible. This pipe was then held in place with concrete anchors and buoys.

Challenges
Initial attempts to set the discharge line proved difficult due to the tidal conditions breaking apart the discharge line. The decision was made to set fused and flanged HDPE on the beach to form as rigid a discharge pipe as possible. The discharge line was routed into the Gulf of Mexico and was held in place with concrete anchors and buoys. In order to install the discharge line, a handful of Mersino employees had to dive in to help set and place the line on the anchor tie-downs under water. The system performed very well and the pit is bone dry. Despite the out-of-the-ordinary challenges, the project was completed on time and the client was satisfied. Project Contact:
