IDOT Bid Order 001 Iowa 2

Ames Construction was awarded the work for the IDOT Bid Order 001 Levee Expansion Project, and in turn awarded us the dewatering portion of the project. We were chosen for the project due to our competitive bid and based on work we’ve done with Ames Construction in the past. The project was slated to last a total of three months from commencement to completion of our portion of the project.

Methodology
We’ve been working to dewater and maintain certain groundwater elevations for the construction of a new levee that is to tie into an existing levee, to help reduce bottlenecking from the river caused by the existing levee. Our dewatering efforts have also been used to help dewater piers for bridge construction to cross over the new levee.

We have a total of four dewatering systems in place for this project, consisting of two 700 foot wellpoint systems which surround a toe drain. We also have two four-well dewatering systems on either side of the road to allow construction of the new levee and to tie it into the existing levee. The construction of the new levee is almost complete, and the tie in of the new levee into the existing levee will be completed in the coming weeks.

Our dewatering efforts have been used to held dewater piers for bridge construction to cross over the new levee.

Challenges
We encountered flooded work areas causing us to work off of temporary platforms constructed by the contractor in order for us to drill and jet our wellpoint systems. We encountered high water tables at approximately two feet below grade in sandy soils, making it difficult to drill with minimal head pressure to maintain an open drill hole. We overcame these issues with the help of the contractor, communicating our needs to them since these were conditions that we did not expect to run into during this project. Ames stepped up, helping us build berms to drill off of, and along with a drill shield, we were able to drill the eight wells that we currently have running. Project Contact:
