Case Studies

BP Whiting Refinery

The British Petroleum (BP) Indiana Whiting Refinery is BP’s largest refinery in the world. BP put out a contract for ongoing dewatering services in support of their operations. Our expertise in the field and our impressive, well-composed bid submittal put us ahead of the competition. This, along with our team of dedicated people and
positive attitude, led us to win the contract.

Methodology/Challenges
We began dewatering work for the Whiting Refinery in 2011. At any given time, there are approximately 3,000′ of wellpoints running at the Whiting Refinery. MERSINO has the responsibility of maintaining these permanent dewatering systems. In 2018, BP bought six custom centrifugal wellpoint pumps from MERSINO to operate in some of these systems.

The grounds in and around the refinery are marshy and swampy. Our crews manually jet all wellpoints to approximately 19′ below existing grade, with complete wellpoint systems as long as 800′. Manual installation has proven to be the best approach due to the known site conditions, which would otherwise cause difficulty for our installation crews. MERSINO has been conducng operations in the refinery for over for eight years, which has given us the advantage of fully understanding the ground conditions across the refinery site. Our knowledge allows us to successfully determine the best system for their needs.
