La Porte Landing Cut Off Wall

The Mersino Environmental Division recently assisted with efforts to accelerate downtown redevelopment on one of the most important historical sites in world manufacturing history. The Mersino custom-built One-Pass trencher and crew worked long hours, straight through the weekend to complete a 1,035 linear feet long by 25 feet deep subsurface barrier wall for the subsequent underground soils remediation.

The site, located in La Porte, Indiana, less than 10 miles from Mersino’s Michigan City office, is part of a 50 acre development site that once constructed the very first pieces of threshing and shelling machinery attached to horses, which advanced global farming practices from humans and animals to machinery and animals. The threshers and shellers were horse-driven wheeled machines that removed seeds and kernels from plant stalks and husks. On the La Porte site, two brothers in their 20’s, Meinrad and John Rumely, emigrated from Germany in 1848 to La Porte. They began building their innovative farm machinery, filed for U.S. patents, then sent the machines all over the world. The brothers advanced the technology to include steam-powered, then kerosene-powered engines. Hundreds of thousands of farm machinery and tractors were built in La Porte for over 130 years. The jobsite became known as the “Harvester Capitol of the World”.

The Mersino Environmental Trenching barrier wall will aid the excavation of subsurface debris from the former farm machinery plant by holding back the adjacent ponds and lakes.

Methodology
The Mersino Environmental Trenching barrier wall will aid the excavation of subsurface debris from the former farm machinery plant by holding back the adjacent ponds and lakes. The Mersino One-Pass trencher simultaneously blends liquids or powder reagents with the site soils, creating a hydraulic barrier capable of preventing the lateral movement of subsurface groundwater. The customized boom, chain, and cutters saw through the soils at a high rate of speed while vertically moving both reagents and soils into a thoroughly blended mixture, capable of meeting the very low permeability requirements. The barrier wall will remain competent despite the high hydrostatic pressures.

The entire La Porte, Indiana community is anxious for this development to continue. The development will eventually include a 200 multi-family housing complex, an international discount grocery store, a medical building and several office and retail establishments. Adjacent to the site, hiking/biking trails and designated parking for fishing and boating will be available. The Mersino Environmental Division is proud to play an important role for the La Porte community assisting with the transformation Case of a distressed industrial property into a recreational haven.
